Put those two facts together and Michigan students have something no other state on this list has: a free, official, genuinely low-risk first attempt at the SAT. Most families do not realize it and waste it.

The Michigan Merit Exam, and what changed in 2026
The Michigan Merit Exam is the state’s mandatory 11th-grade assessment. It has three components: the SAT, the ACT WorkKeys job-skills assessment, and the M-STEP science and social studies tests. Michigan has used the SAT for this since 2016, having used the ACT from 2007 to 2015 — the opposite direction to the switch Illinois made in 2025.
Two changes took effect on 1 July 2026, under legislation signed in May:
The SAT essay is gone from the MME.
Michigan juniors no longer sit the essay component. The College Board stopped offering the essay on national test dates years ago; Michigan was one of the last places it survived.
MME scores no longer have to appear on the high school transcript.
Students now control whether their state-administered score is reported at all. The sponsors’ stated reason was that Michigan students were disadvantaged relative to out-of-state applicants who could choose whether to
send scores.
What this actually means for your prep plan
This is the part worth thinking through carefully, because the strategic consequence is genuinely new.
Before, a Michigan junior’s MME SAT went onto the transcript whether it was any good or not. That made the free test something to fear — you were being graded, permanently, on a test you might not have prepared for.
Now it does not. The MME SAT has become a free, official, low-consequence first attempt. A prepared Michigan junior can sit it, get a real score under real conditions, and decide afterwards what to do with it. If it is strong, it is an official score at no cost. If it is not, it is the best diagnostic in the country — a genuine, timed, Bluebook-administered baseline with a full domain breakdown, taken for free.
The mistake is treating it as a formality. A student who walks in cold gets a number and no plan. A student who has done four to six months of
preparation walks out with either a score they can use or a precise map of where their points are going. Same test, same day, entirely different
value.

On state aid: the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, the current program for 2023 graduates onward, is worth up to $5,500 a year and is income-based — eligibility runs on Student Aid Index, not on GPA or test scores.
The older Michigan Competitive Scholarship did use a test score — an SAT of 1200 or above, plus financial need — but it is being phased out and applies only to certain remaining cohorts.
So, as in New York and New Jersey, Michigan’s live state aid is not keyed to your SAT score. The score does its work on admissions and on institutional merit aid — where, at Ann Arbor in particular, it does a great deal.

Questions Michigan families ask
Do all Michigan juniors take the SAT?
Yes. The SAT is a required component of the Michigan Merit Exam, alongside ACT WorkKeys and the MSTEP, and it is provided free by the state.
Is the MME SAT a real SAT score?
Yes. It is an official College Board score, identical in status to a weekend administration, and it can be sent to colleges.
Do I have to report my MME score to colleges?
Not since July 2026. Legislation that took effect that month ended the requirement for MME scores to appear on the high school transcript, so students control whether the score is reported. Confirm the mechanics with your school counselor.
Is there still an essay on the Michigan SAT?
No. The SAT essay was removed from the Michigan Merit Exam by legislation effective 1 July 2026
Does the Michigan Achievement Scholarship require an SAT score?
No. It is income-based, assessed on Student Aid Index. The older Michigan Competitive Scholarship did use a 1200 SAT threshold, but it is being phased out.
When should we start preparing for the MME SAT?
Four to six months before the spring administration, which means starting in the fall of sophomore year or early junior year. The free test is only free in one sense — walking into it unprepared costs you the one official attempt the state
pays for.
