What Is AP Capstone?
AP Capstone is the College Board’s diploma-style program that complements traditional AP coursework with two specialized, skills-focused classes: AP Seminar and AP Research. Unlike the usual “pick any AP courses” model, Capstone requires students to take:
- AP Seminar
- AP Research
- Four other AP courses in any subject area
To earn the AP Capstone Diploma, students must score 3 or higher on all six relevant advanced placement exams (the two Capstone courses plus four other AP exams). If a student completes both Seminar and Research successfully but does not meet the AP exam or exam-score requirements for the other four courses, they may still receive the AP Seminar & Research Certificate.
How Do AP Seminar and AP Research Work?
AP Seminar
- Focus: Real-world topics, multi-source analysis, and argumentation.
- Coursework: Students do team projects, individual papers, and presentations, combining research, discussion, and public speaking.
- Assessment: Includes a final AP examination based on a written exam with essay and short-response components.
AP Research
- Focus: Independent, year-long, in-depth investigation into a topic of the student’s choice.
- Final Deliverable: A 4,000–5,000 word research paper, plus a presentation and a defense of the research.
- Assessment: Unlike Seminar, AP Research does not end in a traditional exam the score is based on the paper, presentation, and defense.
Why Students Consider AP Capstone?
Here are some of the main advantages of taking AP Capstone as part of your AP examination track:
- Skill Development: You gain research, collaboration, writing, and presentation skills all valuable in college and beyond.
- College Distinction: Completing Capstone demonstrates to universities that you’re committed to in-depth academic inquiry, independent thinking, and rigorous work ethic.
- Academic Coherence: Instead of taking disparate AP courses, Capstone weaves a more unified, thematic structure across your high school workload.
- Flexibility: You can pair Seminar and Research with any subjects for your other AP courses, giving you freedom to shape your strengths and interests.
Potential Drawbacks & Considerations
- Time and Commitment: Taking Seminar, Research, and four additional AP courses (and preparing for their exams) is a significant commitment.
- Cost: Each advanced placement exam carries a fee. Committing to six exams significantly raises the financial investment required.
- Teacher & School Availability: Not all schools offer both AP Seminar and AP Research. Even if they do, the quality of instruction matters.
- College Credit: Some universities may not give credit for the Capstone courses themselves, but they value the skills developed.
- Independent Research Demand Research requires students to self-manage, think deeply, and stay motivated for months. It may not appeal to everyone.
