The SAT is a standardised entry exam used by universities in the United States. However, several universities in Canada, Singapore, the UK, and other European countries also accept SAT scores as part of their entry criteria. It has primarily 2 parts:

  • Reading and Writing — comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and editing
  • Mathematics — algebra, data analysis, geometry, and advanced math
The maximum score is 1600. Since 2024, the SAT is fully digital — called the Digital SAT (DSAT) — and is taken on a laptop or tablet using the Bluebook app.

Things Every Mumbai Student Needs to Know

1. Understanding the Adaptive Edge: Unlike the traditional linear paper-based SAT, the Digital SAT is a multistage, adaptive test. In the Digital SAT, the student’s performance in the first module of the Reading & Writing or Math test will determine the level of difficulty in the second module. The Goal: To achieve a high score, the student needs to get the highest accuracy in the first module, which will “unlock” the second module, the only way to achieve a 1500+ score.
2. Mastering the Built-in Tools: The digital test platform, or the Bluebook app, has a built-in Desmos Graphing Calculator, which Mumbai students, used to traditional calculations and scientific calculators, will find a game-changer. It has the power to solve complex equations and quadratic equations in a matter of seconds, leaving time to solve tricky word problems.
3. Mumbai Specific Center Planning: Mumbai has several high-profile test centers, including schools such as Aditya Birla World Academy, Dhirubhai Ambani International School, and the American School of Bombay. Seats at the centers tend to fill up fast, sometimes 2 to 3 months in advance. Therefore, we suggest that students take the test as soon as the registration window opens, rather than risking travel to centers in Pune or beyond.

5. The “Superscore” Strategy: The vast majority of US and international universities superscore. That is, they consider your highest Reading & Writing score from one date, along with your highest Math score from another date. For our students, we believe that taking the SAT twice, once in March and once in May, is the best strategy.
6. Transitioning from Boards to SAT The SAT tests your analytical skills, rather than your ability to memorize information. For ICSE or CBSE students, the math section of the SAT is often familiar, but the key to the Writing, “Expression of Ideas,” is very different.
