A Level Homeschooling : Private Candidate Guide and Coaching
A Levels can be taken privately worldwide, which makes them the natural continuation for homeschooled students and for anyone who needs a Grade 12 qualification without a school place. It is a well-established route, and it works — but it has three constraints that catch families out: centre availability, practical assessment in the sciences, and, for UK applicants, who will supply the reference and predicted grades.

How A Level private candidate registration works
Step 1 — Choose the board
Cambridge International A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are both open to private candidates. Edexcel’s unitised structure with a January series gives more entry points and easier resits; Cambridge examines in June and November, with a March series available for selected syllabuses and locations. For a private candidate managing their own timeline, that flexibility is a real factor and arguably the most important one in the choice.
Step 2 — Find a centre before anything else
Entries are made through an approved examination centre, not directly with the board. Fewer centres accept private candidates at A Level than at IGCSE, and some accept them only for non-practical subjects. Confirm your centre and your subjects together, six to nine months ahead.
Step 3 — Resolve practical assessment before you enter a science
This is the single biggest constraint on A Level private candidacy. Science A Levels include practical assessment, and arrangements differ by board: some components are laboratory examinations that a centre must be equipped and willing to administer; others are written papers assessing planning, analysis and evaluation. Do not enter a science subject until the centre has confirmed, in writing, that it can administer every component. Families discover this problem far too often after fees have been paid.
Step 4 — Enter by the deadline
Deadlines fall months ahead of the papers, with late fees beyond them. The centre makes the entry; you supply candidate details, syllabus and unit codes.
Step 5 — Plan the two years, or compress them deliberately
A Levels are normally two years. Private candidates sometimes compress to one, which is possible for strong students in some subjects and unwise in most. We will give you an honest assessment rather than agree to a schedule that cannot work.
Step 6 — Sit the papers and collect results
At your registered centre, on the board’s published dates, with certificates issued through the centre.
Predicted grades and references — the constraint that most often derails an application.
For UK applications through UCAS, an applicant needs a reference and predicted grades. A student without a school has neither by default, and this is the constraint that most often derails an otherwise well-planned private candidate application.

Can A Levels be taken privately?
Yes, through an approved examination centre, with both Cambridge and Edexcel. Unlike the IB Diploma, which requires enrolment at an authorised IB World School, A Levels are open to private candidates.
How do I register?
Through a centre that accepts external candidates. Start six to nine months ahead — centre availability, not the board, is the binding constraint, and it is tighter at A Level than at IGCSE.
Can a private candidate take science A Levels?
Often, but only where the centre can administer the practical components. Confirm this in writing before entering. It is the most common planning failure on this route.
How many A Level subjects should a private candidate take?
Three, as with school candidates. A fourth only for a specific reason, most commonly Further Mathematics.
Can A Levels be completed in one year?
Sometimes, for strong students in some subjects, and it is a demanding path. We will tell you honestly whether your subject combination and starting point make it realistic.
Who provides my predicted grades and reference?
Your examination centre if it offers the service, a UCAS-registered centre, or a provider that has taught and assessed you and holds documented evidence. Plan this in Grade 11.
Will universities treat me differently as a private candidate?
The qualifications are identical. What differs is the application logistics — reference, predicted grades and, for some universities, additional verification. Plan them early and it is not a disadvantage.
Can I resit A Level subjects privately?
Yes. Edexcel’s January series and unitised structure give the most flexibility; Cambridge offers November and, for selected syllabuses, a March series in India.
Are Indian universities accepting of A Levels?
Generally yes, with equivalence recognition. Check the current AIU guidance and confirm with each institution, particularly for professional courses.
Do you teach the full syllabus or only support it?
The full syllabus, end to end. Private candidates need teaching, not supplementary tutoring, and that is how the programme is built.
Can you help with admissions tests as well?
Yes — TMUA, ESAT, UCAT, LNAT and TARA, planned on the same timeline as subject teaching.
What if we are switching from an Indian board mid-stream?
