ESAT Test Format
The ESAT comprises five modules:
- Mathematics 1 (Compulsory for all candidates)
- Mathematics 2
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
Structure:
- Each module consists of 27 multiple-choice questions.
- Each module lasts 40 minutes.
- Candidates typically take three modules, totaling 120 minutes.
- Modules are taken back-to-back on the test day.
Module Selection:
- All candidates must take Mathematics 1.
- The selection of the remaining two modules depends on the course requirements of the university applied to.
- For instance, applicants to Engineering at Cambridge are required to take Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics.
Note: Calculators and dictionaries are not permitted during the test.
Test Dates and Registration
- Test Sitting 1: 9 and 10 October 2025
- Test Sitting 2: 6 and 7 January 2026 (Not applicable for Cambridge applicants)
- Registration Opens: 31 July 2025
- Registration Deadline: 29 September 2025
- Access Arrangements Application Deadline: 8 September 2025
Note: Applicants from China, Hong Kong, and Macau must take the test on the second day of each sitting.

Scoring and Results
- Each module is scored separately on a scale from 1.0 (low) to 9.0 (high), reported to one decimal place.
- There is no pass or fail; scores are considered alongside other application components.
- No penalties for incorrect answers; it’s advisable to attempt all questions.
