The IB diploma is a two-year academic programme for students aged 16–19. Offered in over 150 countries, the international baccalaureate diploma programme focuses on developing intellectually curious, ethically responsible, and globally conscious learners. Students completing the baccalaureate diploma graduate with a globally recognised qualification that prepares them for university admissions worldwide.

Unlike traditional curricula, the IBDP curriculum emphasizes:
  • Inquiry-based learning
  • Interdisciplinary understanding
  • Research and communication skills
  • Real-world application of knowledge
  • Balanced academic and personal development

Structure of the IB Diploma Curriculum

The IB diploma curriculum is built around six subject groups and three core components. This structure ensures that students explore a wide range of disciplines while deepening their knowledge in chosen areas. Students must select one subject from each of the six groups.

Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature

Enhances literary analysis, interpretation, and communication.

Group 2: Language Acquisition

Develops multilingual proficiency and cultural understanding.

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

Subjects include economics, psychology, history, business management, and more.

Group 4: Sciences

Includes biology, physics, chemistry, environmental systems, and more.

Group 5: Mathematics

Offers Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation (AI).

Group 6: The Arts (Optional)

Students may choose arts or replace this group with an additional subject from Groups 1–4.

Levels of Study: HL and SL

The IBDP requires students to take 3 subjects at Higher Level (HL) and 3 subjects at Standard Level (SL). HL subjects provide greater depth, preparing learners for specialized academic pursuits.

Core Components of the IB Diploma Programme

Beyond subject knowledge, the IB diploma curriculum includes three core elements designed to foster critical thinking and independent learning.

1. Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Students explore how knowledge is constructed, evaluated, and applied across disciplines.

2. Extended Essay (EE)

A 4,000-word independent research paper that strengthens academic writing and investigative skills essential for university-level work.

3. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

Encourages personal growth through community engagement, physical activity, and artistic expression.

Assessment in the IB Diploma Curriculum

The international baccalaureate diploma programme uses both internal and external assessments. Assessment emphasis includes clarity of thought, analytical ability, real-world application, and academic integrity.

External Assessments

Written examinations marked by global IB examiners.

Internal Assessments (IAs)

Project work, investigations, oral work, and coursework evaluated by teachers and moderated by the IBO.
