IB Computer Science Tutor Online: HL and SL

IB Computer Science splits students into two groups: those who can code and struggle with the written theory, and those who can write about systems and struggle to build anything. Both lose marks in predictable places. The papers reward precise technical explanation; the IA rewards a working solution built for a real client with documented development.

IB Computer Science Tutor Online for HL and SL Tuition

The Course

The syllabus covers system fundamentals, computer organisation, networks, computational thinking and programming, with HL adding abstract data structures, resource management and control, plus the additional depth examined in the HL paper. A case study is examined at HL.

the Assessment

The written papers

Written papers testing conceptual understanding and pseudocode fluency. Answers must use the IB’s own pseudocode conventions, not the student’s preferred language.

The HL case study

HL case study, released in advance and examined as an extended, applied component. Like the Business Management pre-release, it rewards months of preparation and punishes skimming.

The IA

The IA — the solution. A working product developed for an identified client, with planning, design, development documentation and a video demonstration.

The IA Solution

The IA is the component where Computer Science students most often lose a grade they had earned in the papers, and it usually comes down to two things: a client who is not real enough to generate genuine requirements, and development documentation written after the fact.
We work on:
Identifying a student and a problem with real, specifiable success criteria; scoping a solution ambitious enough to demonstrate technique but deliverable in the time; documenting design decisions as they are made; and producing the video demonstration properly rather than as an afterthought. The student designs, builds and documents the solution.
Our detailed walkthrough is in IB Computer Science IA. See also IB Internal Assessment help.

The three mistakes that cost CS marks

1

Writing code in exams instead of IB pseudocode. The conventions are published and examinable.

2

Explaining a system by naming components rather than describing behaviour. “Explain” questions want the process.

3

Starting the IA solution too late to iterate. A solution with no development history documents poorly regardless of how well it works.

How QFS teaches IB computer science

01
Free demo class to understand the student’s needs and experience our teaching approach
02
Topic teaching with pseudocode practice integrated from the first session
03
Programming taught in a language appropriate to the student’s IA plan
04
HL case study preparation structured from the release of the case study
05
Weekly written practice marked against IB criteria with detailed feedback
06
IA milestones with documentation reviewed throughout the development process
07
Fortnightly parent reports tracking progress and areas for improvement
08
One-to-one online classes tailored to the student’s pace and examination timeline

Our counsellors help you shape your profile, strengthen your essays, and present your achievements with a clear, authentic story, not a checklist of activities.

frequently asked questions

Not to start SL, but they will need to be programming competently before the IA. Students entering the DP with no coding background should expect extra time in Grade 11.
Whichever suits the solution and the student’s competence. Java and Python are both common. The assessment is on the solution and its documentation, not on the language.
Yes, it sits in the sciences group, which matters for subject selection when a student wants Physics, Chemistry or Biology as well. See IB DP subject selection.
Yes, from release onward, as a structured preparation strand rather than a revision topic.
