IB Economics Tutor Online: HL and SL

Economics looks like the DP subject you can talk your way through, and that is exactly why students plateau at a 5. The marks sit in three specific places: correctly drawn and correctly labelled diagrams, evaluation that weighs rather than lists, and at HL, the quantitative work in Paper 3. Each is teachable, and none of them improves through re-reading notes.

IB Economics Tutor with textbooks

The four units, and what each one demands

The course runs through an introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, unified by nine key concepts that examiners expect to see used, not merely named.

Unit 1–2

Microeconomics

Microeconomics is diagram-heavy. Market failure, elasticity and intervention questions are all won or lost on diagram accuracy.

Unit 3

Macroeconomics

Macroeconomics rewards students who can explain transmission mechanisms — how a policy actually moves through the economy — rather than stating outcomes.

Unit 4

The Global Economy

The global economy rewards real-world examples. Generic answers about “developing countries” score poorly; specific, current examples score well.

HL extension

HL Options & Quantitative

HL extension content adds analytical depth and the quantitative material examined in Paper 3.

the Papers

Paper 1 — Extended response

Structured essays requiring definition, diagram, explanation and evaluation. The evaluation is where most marks are available and most often skipped.

Paper 2 — Data response

An unfamiliar text and dataset. Students must extract, calculate and apply, and the commonest loss is answering from prior knowledge instead of from the stimulus.

Paper 3 — Policy (HL only)

Quantitative and applied. HL students who treat Economics as a writing subject all year meet Paper 3 without the numerical fluency it assumes.

The Internal Assessment — three commentaries

The Economics IA is a portfolio of three commentaries, each based on a published news article, each linked to a different unit of the syllabus and a different key concept, each within a strict word limit.
The failures are predictable: an article chosen because it is interesting rather than because it contains enough economics; a commentary that summarises the article instead of applying theory to it; diagrams pasted in without being referred to in the analysis; and word count spent on description rather than evaluation.

The three mistakes that cost Economics marks

1

Diagrams drawn from memory rather than constructed

Axes unlabelled, curves unlabelled, the shift not shown, the new equilibrium not marked. Each is a scheduled mark.

2

Evaluation that lists rather than weighs

“However, there are disadvantages” is not evaluation. Judging which effect dominates, under what conditions, is.

3

Real-world examples that are neither real nor current

Examiners reward specificity, and Indian students have excellent, under-used domestic examples available.

Student testimonial

frequently asked questions

SL Economics needs confident arithmetic and graph reading. HL Paper 3 needs genuine numerical fluency — calculations, elasticity, national income figures. Students taking AI SL alongside HL Economics often need extra quantitative support, which we build in.
Yes — article selection, syllabus and key-concept linkage, structure and criteria-referenced review. The student writes each commentary.
The step is real and it is mostly Paper 3. HL also expects deeper analysis in Papers 1 and 2. If Economics is a supporting subject rather than a degree direction, SL is often the better score strategy.
By practising evaluation as a separate skill with feedback, not by writing longer essays. We mark evaluation explicitly in weekly assessments.
Yes — see IB Business Management tutor. They are different subjects with different assessments, and students sometimes discover too late that they picked the wrong one.
For competitive economics courses, Mathematics AA HL usually matters more than Economics HL, and some universities specify it. Check the published entry requirements for your target courses.
Grade 11, ideally before the first IA commentary is attempted, because article selection habits form early.
Yes, and deliberately. Indian monetary policy, agricultural subsidies, GST and trade policy are strong, specific, current examples that most candidates never use.
