IB Business Management Tutor Online: HL and SL

Business Management is the DP subject students most often underestimate. The content is intuitive, which makes revision feel productive, and then the pre-released case study arrives and the marks go to students who can apply a specific tool to a specific business situation and justify a recommendation. Intuition does not score. Applied analysis does.

IB Business Management Tutor Online for HL and SL

The five units

Business organisation and environment, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management, with HL extension content in each.

The concepts running through the course — change, creativity, ethics and sustainability — are expected to appear in analysis, not merely to be named.

Finance and accounts is where most students need the most help, because it is quantitative in a subject they chose partly to avoid quantitative work.

assessment and what each component rewards

Paper 1

Paper 1 is based on a pre-released case study issued months in advance. Students who prepare it properly arrive knowing the organisation better than the examiner expects; students who skim it lose the easiest marks in the subject.

Paper 2

Paper 2 is a structured paper combining quantitative and qualitative questions on unseen stimulus material.

HL Extension

HL extension adds depth and, in the HL paper, an extended response requiring integrated analysis.

Internal Assessment

The Internal Assessment is a research project on a real business issue. HL and SL differ in scope and word count.

The internal assessment

Access & Quality of Primary Data

The research project is decided by the question, and specifically by whether a student can get real information about a real organisation. A project on a large multinational usually produces generic analysis from public reports. A project on a business the student can actually access — a family business, a local firm, a school supplier — produces the primary data and specific analysis that scores.

Our Methodological Focus

We work on: choosing an organisation with genuine access; framing a research question that a business tool can actually answer; selecting the right tools rather than applying every tool learned; and structuring the report against the criteria. The student conducts the research and writes the project. See IB Internal Assessment help.

The three mistakes that cost business management marks

1

Superficial Tool Citation

Naming a tool without applying it. “A SWOT analysis would be useful here” scores nothing. Performing the SWOT on the actual business, and drawing a conclusion from it, scores.

2

Unsubstantiated Judgments

Recommendations without justification. The final marks in most extended responses go to a justified recommendation, including what it trades off.

3

Deferred Case Engagement

Ignoring the case study until the last month. Paper 1 preparation is a term-long task.

frequently asked questions

Economics is theoretical and analytical, with heavier diagrams and quantitative demands; Business Management is applied and case-based. For an economics or finance degree at a competitive university, Economics HL plus Mathematics AA HL is usually the stronger signal. For a management or entrepreneurship direction, Business Management works well. See IB subject combinations for business.
It adds extension content and greater analytical depth, and the HL assessment expects integration across units rather than unit-by-unit answers.
More than students expect. Finance and accounts includes ratio analysis, investment appraisal and cash flow forecasting.
It is issued well in advance of the examination session — confirm the exact date for your session with your school or on the IB’s published schedule. Preparation should begin as soon as it is released.
Yes — organisation selection, research question, tool selection and criteria-referenced review. The student conducts the research and writes the report.
Yes for management, business and many social science courses. For quantitative economics and finance, most admissions tutors weigh Mathematics and Economics more heavily. Check the published requirements for your target courses.
It is a common reason students come to us — Business Management is often taught by non-specialists. We teach the full syllabus independently of the school’s pace.
