IB Chemistry Tutor Online: HL and SL

IB Chemistry is a volume problem before it is a difficulty problem. The content is interconnected, the data booklet is only useful to a student who knows what is in it, and organic chemistry rewards students who see mechanisms as patterns rather than as lists to memorise. Most students who are stuck at a 5 are not missing understanding — they are missing a system.

The syllabus, and the HL/SL split

The course is organised around structure and reactivity — atomic structure and bonding, the classification of matter, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox, and organic chemistry — with HL extending each area substantially. Organic chemistry and equilibrium are where HL adds the most, and where HL students most often need external support.

Standard Level

Core structure and reactivity across all topics, with the data booklet introduced as a working tool rather than a reference to be read once.

Higher Level

Each area extended substantially — most heavily in organic chemistry and equilibrium, where the added depth is where external support pays off fastest.

the Papers

Paper 1A

Multiple choice, testing precision across the whole syllabus. Speed matters; so does not over-thinking.

Paper 1B

Graphs, gradients, uncertainties, experimental design. This is the paper where lab-light school teaching shows most clearly.

Paper 2

Short and extended response, including the mechanism and calculation questions that carry the heaviest marks.

The Chemistry Scientific Investigation (IA)

Chemistry IAs fail on feasibility more than on ambition. A research question that requires equipment a school lab does not have, or a reaction that cannot be measured reliably in the time available, produces thin data no analysis can rescue.

01

Choosing a system where the dependent variable can actually be measured with the precision available.

02

Controlling the variables that matter chemically, not just the obvious ones.

03

Treating uncertainty properly through calculations.

04

Writing an evaluation that identifies specific systematic errors rather than generic ones.

The three mistakes that cost chemistry marks

1

Memorising organic reactions instead of learning mechanisms

Memorised lists collapse the moment an unfamiliar substrate appears. Mechanistic understanding transfers.

2

Skipping units and significant figures

Chemistry mark schemes award and deduct on both. This is free marks lost by habit.

3

Writing equilibrium and energetics answers qualitatively when a quantitative answer is asked for

Command terms again — “calculate”, “determine” and “deduce” require working.

frequently asked questions

Most medical schools in the UK require Chemistry at HL, and many require a second science. Requirements vary by country and university, so check each course’s published entry requirements. If medicine is the target, plan the subject combination in Grade 10.
Yes — feasibility, research question, variable control, uncertainty and criteria-referenced review. The student runs the investigation and writes it.
Yes, and it is usually where HL students see the fastest improvement, because mechanism understanding replaces a large amount of memorisation.
We can teach the full theory course and help design an investigation feasible outside a school lab, but a private candidate must confirm practical requirements with their examination centre.
Driven by the degree target. If medicine, dentistry, chemical engineering or chemistry is likely, HL. If not, SL Chemistry with a stronger third HL elsewhere is often the better score strategy.
Ideally at the start of Grade 11. Chemistry’s content volume makes late starts expensive. Do you also coach Biology and Physics? Yes — see IB Biology tutor and IB Physics tutor.
