IB Physics Tutor Online: HL and SL

IB Physics punishes two things: shallow conceptual understanding, and untidy handling of data and uncertainties. Students who can recite the content still lose marks on Paper 2 extended responses because the explanation does not follow the physics step by step, and on the investigation because the uncertainty treatment does not survive scrutiny. We teach the physics and the assessment together, from the first session.

The syllabus, and where HL pulls away

The current IB Physics course is organised into themes covering space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. HL students take the same themes at greater depth, with additional content in each.

Paper structure and what each paper tests

1A

Multiple choice

Rewards precision and speed. Most losses here are misread stems, not gaps in knowledge, and that is trainable.

1B

Data-based

Graphs, gradients, uncertainties, experimental design. This is the paper where lab-light school teaching shows most clearly.

2

Response

Marks are awarded for the reasoning chain. A correct final number with no visible physics scores poorly; a clearly reasoned answer with an arithmetic slip often scores well.

The Scientific Investigation (IA)

Physics IA marks are decided at the design stage. The commonest cause of a capped grade is a research question whose independent variable cannot be varied over a wide enough range to produce a meaningful trend — so the data is thin, the graph is unconvincing, and the analysis has nothing to work with.
Investigation directions that tend to work: anything where the relationship is non-linear and the linearisation is itself interesting; anything using video analysis of real motion; anything where the student can take enough repeats to make error bars meaningful. See IB Internal Assessment help and our IB Physics study strategy guide.

01

Framing a research question with a genuinely variable independent variable and a measurable dependent variable.

02

Identifying and quantifying uncertainties honestly rather than decoratively.

03

Propagating uncertainty through to the gradient and the conclusion.

04

Writing an evaluation that engages with specific limitations rather than listing generic ones.

The three mistakes that cost Physics marks

1

Treating the data booklet as a formula sheet

Marks come from selecting the right relationship and justifying the selection, not from finding a formula that contains the right letters.

2

Answering “explain” like “describe”

Command terms are specific. “Explain” requires a causal chain; “describe” does not. This distinction alone accounts for a large share of Paper 2 losses. See the IB command terms guide.

3

Skipping the uncertainty work

Uncertainties appear in Paper 1B and dominate the IA. Students who avoid them all year meet them in the exam.

frequently asked questions

They are hard in different ways. Physics HL demands mathematical fluency and multi-step reasoning; Chemistry HL demands precision and a large volume of interconnected detail. Students who are strong at Mathematics AA usually find Physics the more natural fit.
Not formally, but the calculus and algebra load in Physics HL is significantly easier to carry with AA. Students taking AI SL alongside Physics HL should expect to do extra mathematical groundwork.
Yes — research question, variable selection, uncertainty treatment and criteria-referenced review of drafts. The student runs the investigation and writes it up.
One to two hours a week through Grades 11 and 12 for most students, increasing during the IA and mock periods.
We cannot replace school lab access, but we teach experimental design, data handling and uncertainty analysis, which is what the assessment actually rewards. Where a student has no lab access — private candidates in particular — we help design investigations that are feasible with accessible equipment.
Yes, as separate courses. SL students are examined on less content and at less depth, and their preparation should reflect that rather than being HL material trimmed.
Common, and we plan for it. The diagnostic maps what has been covered against what the papers require, and we teach the gap directly.
Yes. Physics HL students applying to Cambridge or Imperial usually need ESAT, and we run that alongside.
