IB Maths Tutor Online: AA and AI, HL and SL

Mathematics is the subject most often responsible for a diploma score that lands two or three points below target. It is usually because a student who understands the content loses marks to method notation, to calculator-paper technique, or to Paper 3 in HL. Those are all fixable, and they are fixable faster than most students expect once someone identifies which one is actually happening.

IB Maths Tutor Online: AA and AI, HL and SL

Analysis & Approach

AA

Emphasis
Algebraic reasoning, proof, calculus
Technology
Less reliant on the GDC
Typical fit
Engineering, physics, mathematics, economics at competitive universities
HL demand
The most demanding Group 5 option

Applications & Interpretation

AI

Emphasis
Modelling, statistics, real-world data
Technology
GDC-heavy throughout
Typical fit
Business, social sciences, design, psychology, many economics courses
HL demand
Demanding, with a heavy statistics load

Higher Level

HL

Emphasis
Deeper concepts, advanced problem-solving and mathematical reasoning
Technology
GDC used extensively; Paper 3 adds advanced problem-solving
Typical fit
Students targeting STEM and quantitative degrees like engineering, physics, maths, CS and economics.
Assessment
3 external exam papers + Mathematical Exploration

Standard Level

SL

Emphasis
Core concepts, problem-solving and practical application
Technology
GDC used where permitted; Paper 1 is non-calculator for both AA and AI
Typical fit
Students who need maths without the additional depth of HL.
Assessment
2 external exam papers + Mathematical Exploration
If you are still choosing, the decision should be driven by your intended degree and its published entry requirements, not by which looks easier. Our full comparison — including which universities specify AA HL — is in IB Maths AA vs AI.

HL and SL — what actually differs

Higher Level is not Standard Level taught faster. HL covers extension content across all five topic areas, examines at greater depth, and adds an additional paper. In AA HL that means proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors and substantially heavier calculus; in AI HL, matrices, graph theory and more advanced statistical modelling.
The practical consequence: an SL student who moves to HL mid-Grade 11 is usually not behind on topics, they are behind on the density of questions. HL questions chain several skills into one item, and the marks are lost in the joins.

The papers, and what each one rewards

Paper 1

Where algebraic fluency is exposed

For AA, Paper 1 is the non-calculator paper, and it is where algebraic fluency is exposed. Students who rely on the GDC through the year meet Paper 1 unprepared. For AI, technology is permitted throughout, and Paper 1 is short-response.

Paper 2

The failure mode, reversed

Calculator-permitted, and the failure mode here is the opposite one: students solve questions by hand that the GDC would answer in ten seconds, and run out of time. Calculator technique — solver, statistics menus, graph intersections, distributions — is a taught skill and we teach it explicitly.

Paper 3 · HL only

Two extended, unfamiliar problems

Two extended, unfamiliar problem-solving questions with heavy scaffolding. Paper 3 is where HL candidates most often lose the 7, because it cannot be revised by topic. It rewards students who have practised reading a long question, extracting the structure, and following a chain of prompts without panicking. We drill it as a distinct skill from January onwards.

The Exploration · Internal Assessment

Worth 20% of the final grade

The Mathematics Exploration is marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics — and that last criterion is where most students cap themselves, by choosing a topic that cannot sustain mathematics at the level of the course.
See Optimization in IB Maths for a worked example of the depth an Exploration needs, and IB Internal Assessment help for the support cycle.

Where IB Maths marks actually go missing

01

Method marks lost to notation

The answer is right, the working does not show the step the mark scheme requires. This is the single most common avoidable loss and the fastest to fix.

02

Calculator paper solved by hand

Costs time, not accuracy — and time is what Paper 2 is short of.

03

Non-calculator paper met without algebraic fluency

Almost always a symptom of GDC dependence built up over Grade 11.

04

Exploration topic chosen too late and too small

Decided in Grade 12, capped at a 4 or 5 before the writing begins.

05

Paper 3 treated as revision rather than as a skill

Cannot be fixed in April.

frequently asked questions

Yes, at both HL and SL, as four distinct courses with separate materials.
Get a diagnostic first. The decision usually turns on whether the gap is topic coverage — recoverable — or algebraic fluency, which takes longer. If a university offer requires AA HL, the calculation changes entirely, so bring the target course list to the conversation.
Honestly, it depends on the starting point and the time left. Movement from a 4 to a 6 over a year of consistent work is common; a two-grade jump in the final six weeks is not. We will give you a realistic target at the diagnostic rather than a number designed to close a sale.
Yes — topic selection, mathematical scope, structure and criteria-referenced review. The student does the mathematics and writes the Exploration.
Use the model your school has standardised on and know it thoroughly. Fluency with one permitted GDC is worth more than owning a better one.
Yes, as a separate strand for HL students from January onwards, because Paper 3 rewards a different skill from topic revision.
Yes, including extended Mathematics, which is the pathway into AA HL. See IB MYP classes.
Yes. AA HL students applying to UK universities frequently need TMUA or ESAT, and we run both.
