Should I retake my IB assessments?

Students are definitely allowed to retake their assessments. However, the decision to retake them is entirely personal.
If you have not achieved a Full Diploma, or are struggling to meet university offer requirements with your current scores, then it may be helpful to consider a retake. Seek out guidance and advice from your IB Coordinator, family, friends, and teachers, as they will understand your perspective the best.
The IBO will consider the highest score among your retakes as your final score, so there is no need to worry if you score a lower grade in your retakes.
The good news is: the IBO offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to retaking exams, offering you a number of options based on your specific needs.

When should I retake my IB assessments?

There is no limit on the number of retakes, which means you can retake your assessments as many times as you want!
Furthermore, you do not necessarily have to retake your exams in the next consecutive session. So, if you initially wrote your exams in May 2026, and you want to retake them, you can do so in May 2027, instead of November 2026.
However, keep in mind that your school may offer exams in only one session, or certain subjects may only be available in one session. Therefore, it is best to speak with your school’s IB coordinator to work out the details, and ensure that you are registered at the correct centre, and for the correct assessments.
To keep your workload and stress levels lower, you should consider retaking your assessments in the next consecutive session. This way, the syllabus content will stay fresh in your mind, allowing you to dedicate more effort to revising rather than re-learning.
If you are applying to universities in the UK and you’ve missed the requirements for your offer, then it is advised to retake your exams in the closest November session. This way, you will receive your new results just in time for the UCAS deadline in the first week of January.

Which IB assessments can I retake?

It is not compulsory for you to retake all your exams. You can choose to retake specific subjects, and you can even choose between retaking your Internal Assessments, or External Assessments, or both. It is best to retake only a few specific exams you want to improve in, as you will be able to concentrate more time and energy to improve your score.
You are also permitted to retake your core subjects, which are the Extended Essay (EE), Theory Of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). There are a few pointers you should remember when considering these:
  • TOK: The prescribed titles change each session, so keep in mind that you will have to prepare for a completely new set of prompts.
  • EE: You are allowed to choose between sticking to the same subject or switching to a different one. However, the contents of your new Extended Essay must be completely different from your old one, as this submission should represent original work that aligns with IB requirements.

How do I prepare for my IB retakes?

  1. Reflect on your past performance. Highlight areas that have a scope of improvement to understand what you need to focus on.
  2. Check if there is any change in the syllabus between exam sessions. If there is any new content, focus on learning that first.
  3. Set clear goals, and aim for a higher score.
  4. Create a structured study plan that targets all the difficult areas of the syllabus.
  5. Utilise past papers to gain a better understanding of the assessment.
  6. Focus on active revision, such as past papers, quizzes, and flashcards, rather than passively reading your notes.
  7. Welcome the support and guidance from the people around you.

Important things to remember

  • IB World Schools are under no obligation to accommodate students who are retaking exams. Therefore, make sure that your school allows for retakes. Otherwise, register to take your assessments at a centre that does.
  • The syllabus may change between sessions. Keep an eye out for any new content that is introduced, and ensure you cover it while studying.
  • Not all subjects are available for retaking in both sessions. Ensure that your retake plans align with the correct session.
  • The costs to retake your IB assessments can vary.
  • Your school’s IB coordinator is your main point of contact. Reach out to them for advice on which exams to retake, which centre and session to register for, and the fees required to retake.
