Student writing an exam while learning about how the TARA Test is scored and evaluated for university admissions

SUMMARY

You’re applying to Oxford or UCL from India, the UAE, or another country outside the UK — and suddenly the TARA test appears in your list of requirements. Nobody at school told you about it. Your counsellor may not have heard of it either. That’s because it’s genuinely new, only introduced in 2025. Here’s everything you need to know as an international applicant.

What TARA Stands For

At Quest For Success, we give guide for TARA is the Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions. It’s a computer-based exam developed by UAT-UK — a joint venture between the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London — and delivered through Pearson VUE test centres worldwide. The critical point: the TARA does not test subject knowledge. You won’t be examined on anything from your IB, A-Level, CBSE, or ISC syllabus. Instead, it tests how you think — your ability to analyse arguments, solve unfamiliar problems, and write a clear structured response under time pressure. This is quite different from most exams international students have experience with.

Which Universities and Courses Require It?

University of Oxford requires the TARA from 2027 entry for: PPE, Economics and Management, History and Economics, History and Politics, Human Sciences, Psychology (Experimental), and Psychology Philosophy and Linguistics. University College London (UCL) requires it for Computer Science, Computer Science and Mathematics, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, and Mathematical Computation. Other universities may adopt the TARA in future cycles. Always verify on your specific course page before registering.

The TARA runs for 120 minutes across three compulsory modules: Module Type Questions Time Critical Thinking Multiple choice 22 questions 40 mins Problem Solving Multiple choice 22 questions 40 mins Writing Task Essay (1 from 3 prompts) 1 essay 40 mins Unused time from one module cannot be carried into the next.

One Thing International Students Often Miss

Many students from India and the Middle East are extremely well-prepared academically — strong grades, IB scores, or board results. But the TARA tests something schools rarely teach: how to analyse and evaluate arguments rather than recall and apply knowledge. This is the gap most international students need to close. The good news is it’s a skill that responds well to structured practice. At Quest For Success, we help students from India and the Middle East prepare for the TARA alongside their full UK university application.
