How Long Is the AP Psychology Exam?

13th October, 2026 | Abhishek Malani | 09 Min Read
Introduction
The AP Psychology exam runs 2 hours and 40 minutes, which makes it one of the shorter AP exams, but its two sections are timed very differently. The first is a quick 90-minute run through 75 multiple-choice questions, and the second is a 70-minute block with only two written responses, each built around research evidence you have to read and analyse on the spot. The exam was also redesigned a couple of years ago, so many older study guides describe a version that no longer exists. This guide breaks down the full AP Psychology exam length, section by section, including how the free-response time is split, what changed, and how to pace each part.

AP Psychology Exam Length: The Full Breakdown

The AP Psychology exam totals 2 hours and 40 minutes. It’s split into two sections that aren’t equally weighted: the multiple-choice section counts for two thirds of the score and the free-response section for one third.
Section Question Type Number of Questions Time Score Weight
Section I
Multiple-Choice
75
90 minutes
66.7%
Section II
Free-Response
2
70 minutes
33.3%
The exam is fully digital. Students complete both sections in the College Board’s Bluebook testing app, with all responses submitted automatically at the end, and free-response answers are typed instead of handwritten.

Section I: Multiple-Choice Timing

Section I gives students 90 minutes to answer 75 multiple-choice questions, a pace of about 1.2 minutes, or 72 seconds, per question. Questions ask students to define and explain content from across the course, apply psychological perspectives and research findings, and analyse data, including tables, graphs, and descriptions of studies. Because this section carries 66.7% of the total score, it’s the larger of the two halves, so steady pacing here matters even though the free-response section feels more demanding.

Section II: Free-Response Timing

Section II allocates 70 minutes to two free-response questions, together worth 33.3% of the score. Each question is worth 7 points, and they come in a fixed order.
  • Question 1: the Article Analysis Question (AAQ): Students read a single peer-reviewed source, and identify and evaluate elements of its research design and findings. A typical recommended allocation is about 25 minutes, including a 10-minute reading period.
  • Question 2: the Evidence-Based Question (EBQ): Students are given three sources and must build and defend an argument using evidence from them, applying related AP Psychology content to justify their reasoning. A typical recommended allocation is about 45 minutes, including a 15-minute reading period.
The question-by-question timings are suggested splits reported by exam-prep sources, not official limits, because the 70 minutes is a single block. Even so, they show that most of the time goes into reading carefully before writing, which makes the reading periods as important as the writing.

What Changed From the Older Exam

The AP Psychology course and exam were redesigned starting with the 2024–25 school year, so the exam is noticeably different from what many older guides describe.
  • Longer overall: The exam grew by 40 minutes, from about 2 hours to 2 hours 40 minutes.
  • Fewer multiple-choice questions, more time: Multiple-choice fell from 100 questions in 70 minutes to 75 questions in 90 minutes, giving students more time per question.
  • New free-response questions: The previous free-response format was replaced by the AAQ and EBQ, both of which are built around analysing research.
  • Fully digital: The exam moved to Bluebook and typed responses, beginning with the 2025 administration.
Students using older practice exams should check them against the current format, since 100-question multiple-choice sets and the previous free-response style won’t match the timing or the skills now tested. Students using older practice materials should check them against the 2027 format, because questions written for the previous structure won’t match the new timing or layout.

When Is the AP Psychology Exam in 2027?

The College Board lists AP Psychology for Friday, May 14, 2027, in Session 2, which published schedules give as 12:00 p.m. local time. For 2027, the College Board is introducing location-based start times in some regions, so students outside the United States should confirm their exact start time with their AP coordinator. Our guide to College Board’s 2027 exam updates explains the scheduling change in more detail.

Pacing Strategy for Each Section

Knowing the total AP Psychology exam duration is useful, but the score depends on how you use each block of time.
  • In Section I, aim for about 70 seconds per question, and flag anything that takes noticeably longer so you can return to it. There’s no penalty for guessing, so make sure every question has an answer before time ends.
  • Use the reading time in Section II. Most of the free-response time goes into reading the sources, so annotate the key design features of the article, or the claims and evidence in the three sources, before you begin writing.
  • Plan your answer before typing. With both responses typed, a short outline of your claim and the evidence you’ll use keeps the response organised and prevents you running out of time.
  • Link evidence to reasoning. Free-response answers are scored on how well you justify your claim, not just on naming evidence, so explain why the evidence supports your point and apply relevant course content.
  • Practise under full timed conditions. At least a few complete 2 hour 40 minute practice exams in Bluebook, including typed free-response answers, make the real pacing feel familiar.

How Quest for Success Can Help

Knowing the AP Psychology exam length is only the start. Building the speed to get through 75 questions and the analytical writing to handle the AAQ and EBQ takes deliberate, timed practice. At Quest for Success, we help students run full-length AP Psychology practice exams in the Bluebook format, refine pacing across both sections, and practise the evidence-based writing that the free-response section rewards.

Summary

The AP Psychology exam runs 2 hours and 40 minutes in total: a 90-minute section of 75 multiple-choice questions worth 66.7% of the score, followed by a 70-minute section of two free-response questions worth 33.3%, the Article Analysis Question and the Evidence-Based Question. It’s fully digital in Bluebook, with typed responses, following a redesign that lengthened the exam from about 2 hours, replaced 100 multiple-choice questions with 75, and introduced the new free-response format. The College Board lists the exam for Friday, May 14, 2027, so students outside the US should confirm their local start time with their AP coordinator.
